Who was first choice for Chelsea striker over Alvaro Morata in the summer?
Romelu Lukaku and not Alvaro Morata was Antonio Conte’s first choice to replace Diego Costa at Chelsea, according to Michael Emenalo. The Spain international played a key role in Chelsea’s Premier League title-winning campaign last season, but was exiled by his manager following a series of bust-ups and sold to Atletico Madrid in the summer.
Conte has earmarked Belgium international Lukaku as his primary target but the former Everton star snubbed a return to his former club and opted to become Manchester United’s record signing.
Morata, who had been tracked by Jose Mourinho, eventually moved to Stamford Bridge in a £58million deal and has made a sensational impact, scoring 10 goals in all competitions and is beginning to form a sensational partnership with Eden Hazard.
Emenalo, who left his role as Chelsea’s technical director last month to take up a similar role at Monaco, confirmed Morata hadn’t been Conte’s first choice but is delighted with how the former Real Madrid striker has settled in.
“As everybody knows in every walk of life, you develop an idea and you have a policy in mind and you have an intent, and if it doesn’t go the way you want, there is some level of disappointment,” Emenalo told talkSPORT.
